Gurgaon has some of the hardest water in NCR — TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels from borewells often exceed 500–900 ppm, and in some areas even higher. Your RO purifier's job is to bring this down to a safe level. Here's how to check if it's doing its job.
What is TDS and What's Safe?
TDS measures dissolved minerals and salts in water. The BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) recommends drinking water TDS below 500 ppm. Most RO purifiers bring it down to 50–150 ppm, which is ideal. Below 50 ppm strips too many minerals; above 300 ppm from a "purified" source means your RO isn't working well.
How to Test TDS at Home
A TDS meter costs ₹150–300 online (Amazon, Flipkart). Testing takes 10 seconds: dip the meter in a glass of water from your RO output tap, wait 2 seconds, read the display. Also test your input water (from the tap before the RO) to compare reduction percentage. A healthy RO should achieve 85–95% TDS reduction.
What If Your TDS is High After RO?
If your purified water TDS is above 200–250 ppm, your RO membrane is likely exhausted and needs replacement. The membrane is the core of the system — without it functioning, you're essentially drinking filtered but not purified water.
How Often to Test?
Test TDS monthly if you're in a high-TDS area like Sector 46–50 or DLF. If you notice the TDS slowly rising month on month, schedule a service — the membrane may need replacement soon.
